Daniel Negreanu Takes the No 1 Spot on GPI’s ‘Player of the Decade’ Rankings

The Global Poker Index, best known as GPI has been working towards a goal of unveiling the top nine players of the past decade including the “Player of the Decade”. We have often heard of the concept of a ‘Player of the Year’ but an entire decade takes it to a different level altogether. The GPI team has been hard at work these last couple of days to determine the best players from the live tournament circuit during the era of the poker boom and have recently comes out with the results.

The list includes well-known poker players who have been the most consistent performers in the last decade and the player who has topped the list with his outstanding performance is none other than Team PokerStars pro Daniel ‘kidpoker’ Negreanu (cover image). The Canadian poker pro has been one of the most consistent performers on the live circuit and has had a great poker career so far. 2014 and 2023 have specially been breakout years for Negreanu; here is a look at some of his career highlights:

In 2014, Negreanu recorded 14 live cashes with four wins and 11 top 10 finishes. His total earnings that year on the live felts passed $4.4 million, his highest grossing year of the decade. In 2023, Negreanu was once again on a heater, garnering 14 cashes, two wins, and seven top 10 finishes. If this was not enough, Negreanu was also the first player to grab the WSOP POY for the second time this year and also won the Bluff Magazine and Card Player Poker ‘Player of the Year’ titles. Negreanu was ranked the no.1 player on the GPI rankings in 2023. The Canadian pro has a lifetime winnings from live poker tournaments of over $19.5 million that places him third on the all-time money list.

His incredible career has given him the honor of being named the GPI ‘Player of the Decade’ and this is what he had to say on receiving the award, “I’m very honored by this award. I’ve worked hard on my game throughout the decade, so that I could find ways to consistently win year in, year out against tougher and tougher competition each year,” said Negreanu. “I’ve never wanted to rest on my name alone and winning has always been important to me. The game has changed a lot over the past 10 years, but the key ingredient for success hasn’t: confidence. I enter the next decade more confident than ever before.”
