When Dream Nut Flush turned into a $1,301,000 Nightmare by Kelly's sadness

Pre-Flop

  • Kelly: 3♥ 2♥ — low suited connectors, potential for straight/flush.

  • Aaron: K♥ J♥ — strong suited Broadway cards, good flush potential.

Flop: 5♥ 4♥ 9♣

  • Kelly: Has a flush draw and open-ended straight draw (needs an A or 6).

  • Aaron: Has a flush draw as well, and currently has two overcards.

So at this point:

  • Aaron is ahead in terms of hand strength, with two high cards and a better flush if it lands.

  • Kelly is drawing to a straight or a small flush.

Turn: A♥

  • Board now: 5♥ 4♥ 9♣ A♥

Now things flip dramatically:

  • Kelly hits a straight flush: A♥ 5♥ 4♥ 3♥ 2♥ — unbeatable unless a higher straight flush is possible (which it isn’t here).

  • Aaron hits the nut flush with K♥ — the best possible normal flush.

Analysis

  • Kelly wins 100% — she has the straight flush, the second-best hand possible in all of poker.

  • Aaron loses 0% equity — despite having the nut flush, he's drawing dead on the turn. There is no card on the river that can save him.

Psychological Note

This is one of those brutal poker scenarios where:

  • The nut flush loses to a straight flush.

  • The losing player (Aaron) probably feels confident with the K-high flush.

  • The winning player (Kelly) might be holding back emotions to not give away her monster hand — hence the "sad face" meme.
