Tom Dwan Sat Down For First Interview Since Troubling Tweets, Mental Health Scare
For the first time since his harrowing ordeal in a mental health facility in London, England in late April, Tom Dwan spoke publicly beyond his own posts on social media.
The online poker legend spoke with Abril Zucchi, an Argentinian streamer involved in cryptocurrency and software engineering, on Monday. Zuchi posted the conversation directly to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

Over the course of their conversation, Dwan discussed his perspective of his time spent at the Park Royal Centre for Mental Health just outside of London, following an apparent incident on an airplane.
Details of Dwan’s stay in the mental health facility or what initially triggered the incident are sparse, beyond his own recollections and a brief interaction with PokerNews Managing Editor Will Shillibier, who briefly visited the facility.
“Obviously I'm not happy with them, [the staff at Park Royal Centre], but I'm even more unhappy with whatever the fuck happened on the flight,” Dwan told Zucchi. “I'm still trying to process what that was. I definitely was processing some versions of details or reality wrong at some point. What I've been told and led to believe that means, is that I had what you would call an acute psychotic episode.
“Apparently, that can only happen from two things, either you have a predisposition, a psychiatric-type thing, which I think it's possible. But it's the kind of thing I've looked at before, like I would be surprised, but then extreme stress can make that more likely. [The other is] substances. And the issue is, I had no substances in my body willingly. So if it was from substances, it means someone gave me something, which wouldn't make sense. Both of the scenarios don't really make sense.”
Unhappy With Certain Media Coverage
During the conversation with Zucchi, Dwan spoke about his perspective of the meeting with Shillibier, who stopped by Park Royal Centre for Mental Health on April 30 to speak to Dwan and check on his well-being. Shillibier later posted a brief video update on PokerNews’ social media accounts.

“When I was told about him, I thought he was one of the doctors,” said Dwan. “Someone came and knocked on my door and was screaming at me, are you meeting whoever, I think the guy's name was William. I'm like, ‘I guess, give me a second.’ And he's like, ‘You gotta decide right now.’ I took a second, took a breath, and was like, ‘Alright, fine, I'll go.’
“And I walked out after the guy. Then they made it take 45 minutes for me to meet the guy, which obviously makes no sense. Like, that's not proper, that's not appropriate. And then I met the guy. We only had 15 minutes, and his story was, ‘Oh, I gotta go because my parking is only for an hour,’ or whatever. And I'm like, buddy, like, I'll buy you a new car. Like, fuck off. I'm in the fucking mental hospital. These people are being crazy to me. A few minutes in, I realized he's actually a PokerNews reporter, and I'm like, ‘Are you fucking kidding?’”
Dwan went on to describe several theories as to Shillibier’s intentions. In a later post on X, Dwan implied he’s considering legal action, writing, “They were sent by docs, not me, and it was an extremely manipulated experience. Barring a bunch of fast and very thorough sorry’s, pokernews and their parent org, will be hit w some stuff soon.”
Tom Dwan Trying To Decompress And Reflect
The initial series of posts on X, which began on April 28 and continued through April 30, detail an increasingly nervous Dwan’s pleas for help from friends and government officials, including U.S. President Donald Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In several batches of messages, Dwan expressed concern for his life and documented a series of alleged incidents and injuries involving his apparent caretakers. He also interacted with an increasingly concerned group of friends who wrote replies on social media.
Almost all of Dwan’s posts remain visible on his public “Posts” timeline. The exception is the post from April 30 sent at 8:11 a.m. PST. Dwan wrote, “Finally feeling a bit better, I got a bit stressed sorry.” Dwan later said staff coerced him to send this tweet to calm the situation.
They took my phone n devices, didn’t give in to my repeated requests for medical care, or my legal rights (nearest relative, tribunal, imha), for ~2weeks, and did what they could to bar me from all contact.

In all, Dwan spent about three weeks in London and returned to social media on May 18.
Over the last few days, Dwan has taken some time away to reflect on what happened in an isolated environment.
“Still trying to process, hence me being on the beach, you know, what the fuck happened?” Dwan said. “And I'm trying to do it in a calm way, you know – avoid too much scary stuff.”
