The why behind your bet

Do you want to get folds, calls or raises? Sometimes it's one of those things, sometimes it is all three..

Know the why behind your bets

One of the biggest errors amateur players make is not knowing why they are betting. They just fire out a bet into no man's land with no idea whether they want a fold or a call.

Three things can happen when you bet:

  • You get a fold
  • You get a call
  • You get raised

You need to know which of these three things you are rooting for before you bet.

Often you are rooting for two of the three, sometimes all three have their benefits.

A stone cold bluff with a trash hand is easy, you want folds.

A bluff with a draw you want mostly folds, but getting called is not a disaster, because you might hit.

A thin value hand like 2nd pair you are looking to get called, but taking the pot down is fine.

A nutted hand like a set you want to at least get called, ideally get raised, and you really don't want to see a fold.

Then some hands it is all three. If you have TT on an 852 rainbow board, what do you want to happen?

A call is good, you are probably ahead. A raise is OK, you are beating things like 8x, 99 and bluffs with draws. Folds are not bad either, you are happy to get a fold and avoid a tricky decision if the turn brings a card higher than a T or completes a draw.

If you ask yourself why you are betting and what you want to happen, you avoid amateur mistakes, like bluffing with made hands or scaring players away with strong hands.
